Kitchen witchin
Kitchens are where we learn some of life's most important lessons...
I’ve reached the stage in adulthood where if I’m not out of the house to make groceries by 8:30/9am, I’m not going. Beating the crowds and shopping with the elders is the vibe. It brings me back to those pre Covid days when making groceries was my adulthood escape. Scrolling on Pinterest for recipes, cruising the aisles looking for ingredients, checking out the fresh fruits and veggies. Bebe and her kids are still sleeping, parking lots empty, available carts and fresh friendly cashiers. There’s something about having a stocked fridge and cabinets that just makes the other headaches of adulthood seem worth it.
Kitchen witchin or cooking as the muggles call it, is my favorite type of magic. Turning individual items into a combination of nourishment, protection, respect and love, is the ultimate fulfillment. I’ve turned my peace of making groceries and kitchen witchin into another outlet to practice and strengthen my photography. Street photography is where I got my start. Artistic people watching is what I call it. The off guard moments of everyday human life and emotion, memories frozen in time. The smiles, frowns, excitement, tears, joys and sometimes even the fears and despairs of life, seen only how you can see it. Beautifully unique. Seeing people in their natural form outside of whatever foolishness of the day or filter sorcery flavor of the week, the internet has boxed them into is nice. What brings people together like food? Shopping, preparing, cooking and eating food brings out our humanity. It levels the playing field for us all, rich, poor, white, black, male, female, old, young, democrat and republican alike. We all have to eat and we all pray it’s good enough to want more.
Any good recipe starts off with an intentional desire. A desired taste or experience. A desired reaction from the recipient. A desire to replicate. I started meal prepping, with the intention of saving time, money and energy. Having a desired recipe and only buying the ingredients for that meal, is a super dope adult hack. Creating photography is just like cooking. Having a recipe helps with the desired outcome. Location, lighting, vibe and emotion are some of my favorite photographic ingredients. They each bring out a different element in the creative process. Add in the ISO, aperture, shutter speed, focal length and angles and well that’s a mighty fine recipe you got there. But again, the recipe doesn’t work if there is no desired outcome. My outcome is always to capture the emotion and soul of whatever or whoever I’m photographing. So are you muggle or magic? Are you taking pictures or making photographs?
